•
visclip a cone you wanks
I'm disappointed. What all addons are on waxx's server?

 • Testing the water here, might do a contest for this later: an "all purpose vehicle". Must be: able to withstand an airdrop, amphibious, able to pass a severe offroad track, seat 2 people, carry X amount of weight, under X amount of props (maybe 100) Constraints: can only use vanilla, the built-in phx, and wire, and fit into a certain size range Bonuses: any unique functions, optional addons, etc. I'd imagine it'd be rated off style, features, functionality, speed, simplicity, etc., and probably as a prize I'd front a few bucks on steam or something. Curious what you guys think.
 • Sounds like a good competition. I'd like to see MakeSpherical or wheel2 / lua wheels on the list of addons that could be used though.

 • Ok the chassis is pretty much ready, but there are so many props - Is there anyone who could give some advice as how to parent it while still having wheels and future modding capability for an engine with propeller? Right now the results have been disastrous, as can be seen in the picture where the outcome would serve a better purpose as a meat grinder rather than as a plane. I watched Karbine's parenting tutorial which was really helpful, but the problem here is that I don't really have one single defined chassis here where to put a gate that holds the parented props, so I don't really know what to do at the moment. When I see all these amazing vehicles people have built here, I know that there is something that can be done though. Also, my Steam name is DeeNbee — I would be very glad if someone could personally assist me with merging this plane.
 • I'd be very interested in that contest, Red. Would be interesting to employ a 6 wheeled dual-V8 engine powered mobile military platform of sorts.
 • Also for a contest that isn't solely purposed on the looks, I'd say the proplimit should be higher than 100. Would make life a lot easier to both get something that has a good purpose of an ATV but still keeping good looks. If you were going to do it, you should open a new thread for it like back when I came to FP in uh, I think August 2010. Even though the stuff I built back in that time was utter crap, I still loved to look at the competition threads. Just my 2 cents.

Also oh god turn off the bloom. Looks like a dang nuclear bomb exploded in the background. [editline]edit[/editline] Ah shit, pageking once again. Let me take a picture of my Volkswagen Type 2 after it got some constructive criticism. Planning on getting a video of it out by Friday or so. Hopefully I did the window frames correct this time, looked up a bit more references. If not, god dangit. ~230 props. It's really hard to optimize more than it is at the moment due to tons of tiny curves on it. Going to release this one car when I'm done with all the different colours. Any suggestions? Right now, I have green and blue. Needs to be a strong yellow if anything as it blends a lot in with the white. [editline]edit[/editline] blue. • Heard a lot of people talking about visclip at some point. What is it? I just got back into Gmod after a few years of not touching it. :v:

 • Look one page back. I have already anwsered that question. And now more progress on the Mi24A: Now all I need to do: *Make it fly (I'm considering using for the first time the Starfall procesor) *Make it fly more realistically (by that I mean by using ACF engine and gearbox) *Make it look nicer. At that moment it's one big plastic heli-shaped condom.

 • How did you guys all get this good? Like with the engine building and transmission and such. I've looked at MrWhite's videos but above that, I can't really find any resources on the web for this more advanced Gmod engineering. Anyone care to fill me in? EDIT: I don't want to double-post so I'll just edit this one since no one has had the time to respond yet. I've learned some by reverse-engineering (Ooh, fancy words!) some of MrWhite's thruster engines, and I think I'm even getting a hold on the E2. Of course I'm still looking for some more resources; e.g how to transform the movement of the crankshaft (Hope I'm using that right...) to forward momentum and making the wheels spin.
 • Advanced Duplicator 2 seems to be messing up my pod controllers from time to time. I'm at version 52 of my camper van and all of a sudden, the steering went. The hydraulics still work, they just don't get activated when pressing A or D. Sort of annoying but oh well. I'll probably release it tomorrow with a video, we'll see. [editline]edit[/editline] I restarted GMod and now it works. Dangit, I hate when stuff like that happens, you try to find out what caused it and then it fixes itself.

 • yeah but that propeller tool doesn't really strain an engine. it just takes rotational speed and makes magical forward force; the engine isn't strained at all

 • What Karbine said is correct. I myself have attempted to create an E2 that applies both forward force and counter-torque based on RPM, to more accurately simulate a propeller. I may release the code. It went something like this:
Propeller:applyTorque(vec(0,0,(Propeller():angVel():yaw()/6))*Modifier) Propeller:applyForce(Propeller:up*abs(RPM)*Modifier)
Gotta love that dirty code. I'd still have to work out the proper forces to figure out how much force would realistically be output per amount of torque (which involves figuring out how much weight a typical engine of x power output can move and other things to give me a power curve that I can reference to figure out how much force needs to be applied depending on the amount of counter-torque applied and vice-versa), but that requires maths, and I hate maths.

It isn't actually a variable in the expression, it's just a place holder because I'm not entirely sure what should go there. Probably something in the low-to-mid hundreds though. Just play around with it until you get decent results. Also, make sure you use the weight tool to make the E2 gate (which thanks to the @model header makes it double as your propeller prop) weigh the same as the regular propeller prop and not the default 1. Lastly, the models path in the @models header has it set up to make it Giga's normal 3 bladed propeller, (I have the same pack as you, coincidentally) if you want something different, go to the spawn menu, find the icon of the one you want, right click -> copy to clipboard, and replace the model path I have in the E2. (Protip/hint: you can make an E2 gate take the form of any prop you want using @model and the model's model path from the spawn menu.) EDIT: I'm doing some investigating in the LUA files for the propeller tool to see if I can find out the mathematical relationship between rotational speed and the force the propeller applies, if I find it, I'll update the code above, and with a little luck it should act almost exactly like the propeller tool. EDIT2: After some trial and error I came up with a code very close to the Propeller Tool's, it is more powerful than the propeller tool for a given efficiency, works equally well in both directions, and I eliminated the RPM cap issue. It turns out the way the code was written caused it to try and take the natural logarithm of a negative number after a certain RPM was reached, which caused the power to cut out. I made it so that the function is always positive and just applies the same force in the opposite direction for backwards rotation. The updated code is posted above. Have fun!
Found this a while back, just did the search and pulled it up again. I've not tried it yet but been meaning to. Looks very useful. I've been meaning to make one like that for fin. I don't like using custom addons but fin is very useful. [editline]today[/editline] XXXmags made one.
I have a E2 code that simulates lift, it acts very similarly to fin but does not have all the odd tendencies of it (the lateral swishing you describe and there is a DEFINITE increase in lift with speed). Here it is:
@name Simulated Wing @inputs E:entity @outputs L K A V M Q interval(10) K = 2*pi()*atanr(E:velL():z()/abs(E:velL():x())) A = (E:boxSize():y()*0.0254)*(E:boxSize():x()*0.0254) V = sqrt((E:velL():x()*0.0254)^2 + (E:velL():z()*0.0254)^2) if(V == 0) {K = 0} L = ((V^2)/2)*K*A E:applyForce(E:up()*-L) Q = K/(2*pi()) M = sinr(Q)*L E:applyForce(E:forward()*-M)
This unlike fin does not produce lift perpendicular to the surface of a prop but to the direction of motion, there is much less resistance produced because of it.
