• Would you be interested in a DarkRP map collab?

As the title says, I'm wondering if anyone would like to collaborate on making a DarkRP map, much in the same way that the Shopping Mall Collab was organised. This means people can pick what building they want to create, and then they upload the vmf to be put in the full map. I'm asking if anyone is interested before going ahead with the thread to gauge the forum's opinion and interest. And please tell me if this is a stupid idea!
Before someone else comes in and talks about how DarkRP is the scum of the earth, I'd be up for another collab with a bit more freedom. Maybe just call it an urban city collaboration, not necessarily DarkRP. Before you try organizing a collab though, do you have any experience mapping or did you just come here to try and get other people to make a map for you? It really helps to be the former.
Yeah it really sounds like I just want people to make stuff for me, but I thought it would be a fun thing for the community to get involved in. I've been making maps for a while, but I have never released any of them because I have never finished one. [editline]26th October 2013[/editline] In relation to my mapping experience, this may give you some idea http://imgur.com/a/h1hvx
I think it sounds interesting. I strongly suggest figuring out a way to manage it before you start though, lot of collabs go bad because there isn't very good management.

I suggest coming up with a collab layout, then assign areas to mappers. then have someone clean up and optimize and merge it all together. Also func_instance
Also func_instance
Func_instance is amazing for collab projects, I did one with another person once and what we ended up doing was having one main map file that was pretty much all func_instance (contained general layout, skylighting, etc) and then we just updated parts we were assigned when we had time. We saved all our parts in a shared dropbox folder that way whenever one of us wanted to see what the map was looking like all they had to do was compile the main map.
I'd be interested in contributing the inside of at least one building :P
I would love to contribute
A concept I have been looking at was to do the Kowloon Walled City. [t]http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/057/5/9/kowloon_walled_city_by_archangelselect-d4r0pmw.jpg[/t] It would allow for a good deal of creativity, and if you take a GMod Spin on Kowloon, you could give it an almost mingebag like appearance.

Best of luck with the colab.
I'd love to contribute too , Do we have a template or a specific size?
Ok, don't know if anyone's still watching this thread but I need some advice on the project; Should I create a road layout for the map for people to build on, or should I just let people create buildings and then create the roads?
you should create a layout first, roads and all that, then from that blueprint designate areas (e.g. apartments, prisons) for the mappers to work on. all you would have to do is to really just put everything together.
I don't want to restrict people to a certain area :(
I don't want to restrict people to a certain area :(
Well you kind of have to for it to work.
Yeah, I would create a road network with various spaces set to certain dimensions. Then once you have your layout, let everyone know what spaces are available and what size they are.
I would love to see a new map done. I am so sick of seeing rp_downtown in all the servers, and then there really isn't anything anyone else is willing to try/download. The only issue I see with doing a collab is games. Not sure if your gonna limit that or not. I have like every source game so its no biggie for me, but for the general public you will have some issues. It is a shame because you can make some much better looking maps with other textures and stuff from other games. I sorta feel not having that stuff is of no excuse, mainly because they go on sale so much it is not funny. But some people who are of age 13 do not make any source of money. I would help but I have only modeled one map, I would need to see the areas you want us to make.
I'd be willing to give it a shot. Maybe I could do a health clinic, or a convenience store, or anything small in general.
I would make the road network and zone out certain areas for what you want in them (commercial, housing, etc). This way you don't end up with something weird like a casino next to a one story house.
