• Betsy DeVos (Department of Education) shits the bed in confirmation hearing, internet explodes
After her bumpy confirmation hearing Tuesday night, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of education was a social media sensation Wednesday. Video snippets showed DeVos struggling to answer questions about the best way to measure student performance. Her suggestion that allowing states to permit guns in and around schools could help protect against grizzly bears was relentlessly mocked on Twitter. Perhaps most damaging was DeVos’ suggestion that states should handle enforcement of a federal law that protects the civil rights of children with disabilities.

“At this point, we are definitely sounding the alarm of concern,” said Denise Marshall, executive director of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates. “It’s clear she has no clue about the requirements under the law. That’s a dangerous thing.”

During the hearing, one exchange on special education law prompted gasps from spectators in the room’s overflow crowd. Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) had followed up on an earlier question by stressing to DeVos that “federal law must be followed where federal dollars are in play.” “Were you unaware that it is federal law?” Hassan asked. “I may have confused it,” DeVos said.
Franken, Sanders, and Warren on the committee. maybe the gop will do the right thing and reject her
You mean someone who doesn't have any kind of background in education doesn't know shit about it? Color me surprised.
Her husband was the previous CEO of Amway, the Multi Level Marketing scam that isn't considered a scam yet. So, interesting few years we have ahead of us. A joke in every single administrative position.
A joke in every single administrative position.
Mattis is an extremely solid choice for SecDef though (about the only one)
Mattis is an extremely solid choice for SecDef though (about the only one)
Because of the comic from Terminal Lance though, that just furthered my conviction that this year is a fever dream gone terribly awry
You mean someone who doesn't have any kind of background in education doesn't know shit about it? Color me surprised.
Reminds me of work. Someone got hired at our workplace despite having little knowledge of his/her job that was given. It's a pretty darn high ranking job too, so double points for how screwed we are!
Mattis is an extremely solid choice for SecDef though (about the only one)
Mattis isn't a great pick(IMO) but he's the best pick he's made, yeah
Mattis isn't a great pick(IMO) but he's the best pick he's made, yeah
with picks like these the bar isn't very high
:snip:

Is it just me, or does every politician who "shits the bed" start out by drinking the water? I had my doubts about how capable this woman is, but it's starting to sound like she really does have no idea what she's doing. I'll edit this post when I find three hours to watch the hearing and formulate an opinion.

Trump chooses only the best people
Mattis is an extremely solid choice for SecDef though (about the only one)
And apparently he's been on thin ice and has been butting heads with the Trump administration. What a surprise that the most capable pick would be the one they have the most issues with.

He more or less verbatim said to me that he would rather me be a lazy bum hanging around the house all summer than take these jobs. One job was sealing driveways (with carcinogenic chemicals) for a buck over minimum wage. The other was selling overpriced knives for this piece of shit Ginsu/Amway-clone called Vector. He saw that I'd been completely suckered on the fucker's sales pitch and counseled me away from it; I went back over the handout and my notes from the info session with skepticism and figured out how MLMs work.

Like Cutco? Fuck me, that brings back unpleasant memories. Glad you had the fore-warning not to do it.

ive been able to catch most of the hearings so far and this is the only one that I think might not get confirmed
I was lucky enough to get a grant to make it through 4 years of college, though it didn't cover those scummy textbooks. Though it was so stressful that it ended up being pointless. I was usually very sick and made 0 connections there. Ultimately, I might have actually been in a better situation if I hadn't of gone to college full time. I did learn things and still feel like I have a knack for network administration, but it doesn't matter as I have no connections.
What a goddamn disaster. Though I'm not really surprised anymore. We are so fucked, in every possible fucking way.
I wish Trump would be at least a little more subtle about placing semtex on the load bearing points of our government. I mean, at this point it's a matter of whether it's cronyism or actual espionage, and that's not good for a President that still hasn't been sworn in. I'm an advocate for armed teachers in schools, at least in metro areas. But being an educated person, that also means I'm an advocate for training those teachers in the operation, maintenance, law, and theory in the use of firearms for those teachers as well. I need to read a little deeper into what they meant by she had no idea about the law regarding federal law and federal funding, the article wasn't very clear about it (or I'm bad at reading, I just woke up.) e: whoops they put it in the next paragraph:
Earlier, Tim Kaine had asked DeVos whether all schools that receive taxpayer funding should be required to meet the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. “I think that is a matter better left to the states,” DeVos responded.
"I may have confused it" hahahahaha
It's kind of uncanny how much resemblance(both physically and in policy) Betsy DeVos has to Dolores Umbridge.
It's kind of uncanny how much resemblance(both physically and in policy) Betsy DeVos has to Dolores Umbridge.
I don't really see much of a physical resemblance but policy-wise yeah, she's like a mirror of the character.
I don't really see much of a physical resemblance but policy-wise yeah, she's like a mirror of the character.
If you pop off the glasses and change the hair color from brown to blonde, it's pretty much the same old-evil-woman look.

I remember getting a ton of mail from Vector. I'm glad the thought of going door to door hocking knives kept me away from a pyramid scheme.
