A Catholic school in northern St. Louis recently fired its music teacher after learning of his plans to marry his male partner in New York, according to The St. Louis Post-Dispatch Wednesday morning. Al Fischer, a music teacher at St. Ann Catholic School for four years, received termination in mid-February after a representative of the St. Louis Archdiocese overheard his plans to marry his partner of over 20 years. A spokesperson for the local Archdiocese supported St. Ann’s pastor Bill Kempf’s decision, citing Fischer’s decision to marry violated the Christian Witness Statement. The statement requires that all Catholic education employees sign a contact to “not take a public position contrary to the Catholic Church” and “demonstrate a public life consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.” Many parents were upset over Fischer’s firing and stated that it was well known that he was gay. Fischer wrote a letter to parents that declined to blame “St. Ann or its leadership” for his firing, but urged them to have a conversation with their children “about whether or not justice was served here.” The LGBT Center of St. Louis told The Raw Story that they plan to release a statement condemning St.Ann’s decision to fire Fischer at a later time. Aren't there some kind of law that prevents people for being fired for no good reason?
What stupid bullshit. His decision to marry a man in another state has no bearing on the quality of his teaching and should not be grounds for dismissal.
Aren't there some kind of law that prevents people for being fired for no good reason?
Not in the US, sadly. Worst part about it is companies would bitch and lobby their way out of any attempts to put in place some regulations designed to prevent shit like this.
It really sorta blows my mind, America. All these pressing issues in the world, and you choose to spend so much time flipping out over gay people.
Aren't there some kind of law that prevents people for being fired for no good reason?
He signed some bullshit contract that says if he does something the church doesn't agree with he can be fired. To know that people are having their rights taken away based on how they are is something that should have been abolished in the 1800's.
Wow in my opinion the US seems worse every time i read something about it!
Yeah, that describes organized Catholicism since forever ago.
America, land of the free.
Not in the US, sadly. For example you could walk into work one morning be told "go home, you are fired" and if they wanted that would be that?
In about 30 states, yes.
One step forward and 67 steps backwards.
I don't think they should but I mean, they do have their own beliefs, what's the point of making a private school to practice and teach your religon if you have teachers that are against your own beliefs.
But...Why would a gay teacher teach at a CATHOLIC school? I mean, the religion claims you're a filthy abomination not worthy of life...
Well what did he expect? It is a school run by religious bigots. He should just get a job at a proper school
Aren't there some kind of law that prevents people for being fired for no good reason?
He's lucky he wasn't stoned to death, what do you mean no good reason?
He's lucky he wasn't stoned to death, what do you mean no good reason?
That he is gay is NOT a good reason. A good reason is if he's done a lousy job after several complaints or if he has done something that could compromise his job.
It's a Catholic school, privately run. Being gay is pretty much against their teachings, so of course they'll fire him. I'm not saying it's right, but you can't honestly not expect this? I mean, yeah, I guess the whole 'he being gay at a Catholic school' kinda explains it, yeah, against beliefs and shit such as that. I understand completely. But I think that they should evaluate him by his skill rather than his abilities. I mean, was he a good teacher? If so, just overlook that, for fuck's sake.
But...Why would a gay teacher teach at a CATHOLIC school? I mean, the religion claims you're a filthy abomination not worthy of life...
The Catholic Church's position is that being gay isn't a sin but gay sex/marriage is, and they allow gay members of the Church. Obviously that is still pretty pathetic and backward, but they're nowhere near as bad as the fundamentalists.
While it does seem unfair, I'm going to say, what did you think was going to happen? Catholicism hasn't been exactly been known for welcoming gay marriage with open arms.
Aren't there some kind of law that prevents people for being fired for no good reason?
no but I'm quite sure that there are court cases where the victim has won that are similar
Wow in my opinion the US seems worse every time i read something about it!
Shit like that happens in most countries in the world.
So you're telling me that within the US you can be fired from your workplace without a reason being given? For example you could walk into work one morning be told "go home, you are fired" and if they wanted that would be that?
Not really. In most states, there's some kind of clause where if you are fired within the first 90 days of employment, you don't need a reason and aren't eligible for unemployment. On the other hand, after those 90 days, most states require (AFAIK) that anyone laid off must be given a reason and then be eligable for unemployment benefits.
Aren't there some kind of law that prevents people for being fired for no good reason?
Only in the UK. ( And other sane countries. e.g; not America. )
It's pretty easy to see why he was fired, a gay working at a private religious school, it's not like he was working at a public school where they teach evolution and the big bang in science.
It really sorta blows my mind, America. All these pressing issues in the world, and you choose to spend so much time flipping out over gay people.
Wow, you're not over-generalizing at all or anything, there.
Wow, you're not over-generalizing at all or anything, there.
sadly he's sort of right. Anti-Gay lobbies spend a shitload of money
Why is it always Music teachers? :v: [editline]1st March 2012[/editline] That are gay, I mean.
Why is it always Music teachers? :v: [editline]1st March 2012[/editline] That are gay, I mean.
Because gay guys are good at music and generally more creative
